Guinea Pig Re-homing Norfolk

Rescue and Re-homing based just outside Norwich

Unfortunately we have had many pregnant guinea pigs arrive lately. Breeding guinea pigs can have many complications, so I thought it would be a good idea to tell the story of each pregnancy. According to statistics 1 in 5 pregnancies result in complications for the mother, sometimes fatal ones. Still born pups are common, and even after birth smaller and weaker babies may die.

If you are thinking of breeding your pet please read this as you hopefully will think twice before doing so.

I dread pregnancies when it comes to delivery time as the results can be heartbreaking. Hopefully all of these girls that are currently pregnant will have no complications and we will have healthy minipigs in the new year.

Pregnant guineas taken in so far: 12 (not including mums with babies at foot)

Deliveries: 8

Still born babies: 3 (all large single babies)

Babies passing away after being born: 0

Babies surviving: 12

Mums lost due to birthing: 1 (passed away some time after giving birth)

After a lot of anxious waiting Merry gave birth to four beautiful babies yesterday morning.

I think there are 3 boars and 1 sow but on of the boys might turn out to be a girl yet! Some newborns can be a little unclear to sex.

As you can see Merry is a lot larger now!

Lots of pregnant girls arrived today.

Merry

Bandit

These girls will be staying here and we will keep you update on their progress.

On 9/02 and 10/02 a Mum and babies and a pregnant sow arrived from the same owner. Both sows are older Mums being 4 years old.

Flurry is a 4 year old red eyed White sow and has two babies born on 6/2/08

Here she is nursing her babies

premilmary sexing is that both the babys are male.

Doon is a 4year old dark eyed cream sow, her pelvis is well seperated so she should be having her babies soon.

It feels like she has only one baby.

15/2/08 the vet confirmed my suspicions and she is in the earlier stages of pregnancy with one baby but other wise in good health.

29/2/08

Doon gave birth to a lovely baby boy last night without any complications thank goodness. Mum and son doing well.
